Youth mental health is extremely important, as it affects the well-being and future success of young people. Mental health issues can lead to low self-esteem, bullying, academic struggles, social isolation, mental illness, violence and even suicide. Addressing mental health concerns from the outset can result in better adult outcomes. At the heart of our mission is the goal of breaking intergenerational trauma.

Our Story

The foundation aims to promote youth mental health and raise awareness amongst parents and teachers who play pivotal roles in children's lives. We provide Mental Health Awareness Campaigns, Youth Wellness Programs, Parental and Teacher Wellness Programs for schools, communities and organizations.

The foundation was established by Felicia Goosen, who struggled with mental illness herself during her adolescent years. Due to a lack of awareness and understanding of her diagnoses, coupled with stigma, her journey was difficult. However, she survived several suicidal attempts and was able to embark on her healing journey once she became aware of and understood her mental health challenges.

In October 2015, as a 20-year-old at the time, Felicia saw a need to assist young woman with their self-worth and identity between ages 12 and 25 years of age in the south of Johannesburg. In addition, assisted young participants with toiletries, clothing, life skills and empowerment skills.  She established Jewels & Gems, now known as the FGwellness Foundation. In March 2017, Jewels & Gems launched in Cradock, Eastern Cape which included young boys in the program. Thereafter, in April of 2018 it launched in other areas namely the South of Johannesburg and in Ruimsig. In 2021, Jewels and Gems expanded their impact online and to schools supporting young people through mental health challenges during covid by mentorship, workshops, education, and counselling.

In January 2023, Jewels & Gems transitioned into FGwellness foundation.
